Principles of Garden Design - Balance

When people write about the principles of design, they often deal with balance first. This is because if a design is poorly balanced, people will usually focus on that shortcoming before they notice other flaws.

In this article, I am trying to relate floral design to garden design. Symmetry has been the norm since ancient Egypt. The photo below is of an asymmetrical arrangement, but the strong triangular form is also very characteristic of design in Western Civilization.

Please ignore the green fabric in the photograph. There were several arrangements on that table.

Triangular floral arrangements have only been common in Western Civilization for a century or less, but triangles were often used to balance compositions in Renaissance art. While symmetry is very characteristic of design in Western Civilization, the use of geometric forms is equally characteristic. I am not sure that I really understand how other civilizations achieved balance in design, because I will always look for an underlying geometry. Like most people, I tend to find what I have been trained to look for.

I am not a flower show judge, but I have attended the design courses at a flower show school, where the judges are trained. Flower show judges are trained to look for an imaginary central axis. This axis is always vertical because balance is related to the forces of gravity. Weight (actual or visual) is supposed to be distributed on each side of the axis to create a sense of balance. When using symmetrical balance, the axis is supposed to be placed in the center of the design, but the axis doesn・t need to be at the center of an asymmetric design.

I will be honest with you. My only real artistic gift is my sense of composition. Even before I learned who to draw, I could create something that others saw as artistic because they saw the composition as artistic. My floral arrangements don・t get criticized for being poorly balanced, but unless the design is symmetrical, I am not even thinking about an imaginary axis. I don・t even know where to look for the axis in my triangular arrangement. In my eyes, the composition is balanced because it is a triangle. The tall leaves of New Zealand flax do angle off to the right and that destabilizes the composition enough to add visual interest, but the base of the triangle has enough visual weight to counterbalance those leaves.

The Handbook For Flower Shows tells flower show judges to look for an imaginary axis, so I suppose that a good judge could see one in my triangular design. My inability to see the axis may be connected with decades of looking at 16th and 17th century European art and architecture. I may have learned where to place the axis in a triangular composition by looking at masterpieces, or I may just naturally have a gift for doing that. It is probably like speaking a language. When speaking your native tongue, you will follow a lot of rules that you never consciously learned.

I am glad that I decided against becoming a flower show judge. It would be very difficult for me to stick to the rules in the handbook when judging a design.

It may be easier to talk about balance when a design lacks it. The photograph below is of an arrangement that I did at the end of the library counter. All three of the designs shown in this article were displayed on the 4th of July.

This was a fun design because the red Crocosmia ．Lucifer・ towered over everyone, so it got an immediate response from them. The photo was taken early in the morning. Those yellow flower buds are Saint John・s Wort (a bush Hypericum). Within two hours those buds were fully open, so there was more yellow in the design, but not enough to really balance the arrangement. The tall yellow flowers are a species Peruvian lily (Alstromeria aurantiaca). If I had more of them in bloom, the arrangement might be better balanced. This is a side view of the arrangement and it did work better from the front, but the composition is awkward.

I had two compositions going on in this arrangement. The yellow flowers formed a loose triangle and the red flowers formed a fountain. There are yellow crocosmia hybrids. I don・t grow them in my garden, but if I had arranged them among the red ones, the design would have been much better balanced. The composition would have been fountain shaped and the existing yellow triangle would have just given the design more weight.

You may be wondering how this relates to garden design. Please notice that the flowers are arranged in three crocks. This was my first attempt at a synergistic design. A synergistic design is supposed to be composed out of at least three or more units of plant material, containers, and/or other components which have common characteristics. When placed together, the individual units are supposed to form a single design. This would be an interesting way to display potted plants in a garden. As Michael Vysckocil points out in Suite 101・s topic on Yard and Garden Planning, ：Putting together a container garden is more like assembling a flower arrangement than planting a garden.； I might add that displaying several container gardens together could create a synergistic arrangement and if that arrangement is balanced, you will have created a successful work of art.

The Landscape Design Process is more than choice and placement of plants and physical components. It is a series of steps that help landscape gardeners work in an organized manner. It is the foundation of a workable and attractive garden landscape. An effective landscape design allows revising certain steps to change desired results. Checking and revising outcomes also make design a circular process.

Avoiding an organized landscape design process may lead to common design problems that are frustrating, irritating and perhaps costly. The resulting landscape garden just does not look or feel "right."

A well thought out plan checks beginning impulse projects like walkways, decks and planters that are never finished or do not accomplish anticipated functions. A plan avoids impulse plant purchases that lead to hit and miss borders and often-poor plant growth.

Landscape Design Process Checklist

1. Useable and well-defined paper plan. This lays the groundwork and should include:
• Compass directions;
• Property lines, easements and restrictions;
• Driveway and bordering streets, sidewalks and paths;
• House, garage and any outbuilding;
• Entrance or public areas;
• Private, garden and recreation areas;
• Existing plants and garden areas; and
• Service areas like compost and trash bins, clothes lines and storage structures.
• Survey of site and environmental conditions. Do not omit this step, as plants will not grow in hostile environments. On the paper plan, include at the minimum:
• Soil tests done by reputable laboratories;
• Presence of animals such as deer and rabbits which like to eat plants, and
• Prominent physical features � like boulders and streams./li>
• Time, money, and maintenance. This step demands honesty and costs for time and money of project implementation as well as that of maintenance. This is also a good step to consider availability of large trees and shrubs and hardscape materials like gazebos and boulders, their costs, and suitability to the overall plan and budget.
• Aesthetics and visual impact. This is an opportunity to determine the landscape's overall function. Is it as lovely from the inside looking out as it appears from the street. There are garden landscapes that are lovely to look at and perhaps dream within, but not the functional ones in which we want to rest or play, and with which we want to surround families and ourselves.

Watch, Record and Plan Ahead

The most difficult of these five categories with which to come to grips is that of learning sites and environmental conditions. It is difficult to go slow, arrange for tests, and take time to collect, record and analyze data. Landscape gardeners want action! The beginning of a new project is, however, the best time to stop everything, including the chain saw and trips to the local plant outlets. Now spend several months, including those during your area's snow or rain season, to watch, record on paper and film, and plan.
